It is a Latin phrase that means "Let them hate, so long as they fear". In addition to being a rather fitting phrase for our dear potions master, it holds special significance for me personally. I won't go into sordid details of my personal life, but suffice it to say that the reason I write Severus' voice with such confidence is because I identify very closely with the Byronic hero archetype (whether or not this is a valid identification is, of course, a debate of its own).
It has come to my attention that this phrase is now being used as a motto for some of the more right wing conservative groups in the United States; namely, those who strongly support the war in Iraq, among other agendas that I would rather not be associated with.
Therefore, I feel it neccessary to state that I am in no way affiliated with or supportive of those groups.
I am a "bleeding heart liberal"- I actively support causes such as same sex marraige, and I am a proud member of the Democratic National Party. Most importantly in this case, I am one hundred percent opposed to the war in Iraq.
That said, I have no intention of changing the title of this journal. It has been around for two thousand years, and as such I do not feel inclined to stop using it simply because others who support causes I do not believe in have decided to claim it for their own. You can't trademark ancient Roman poetry.
I apologize if I have offended any of you who may be members of said conservative organizations- on the other hand, if you choose to stop reading this journal based on my political views (which have nothing to do with our mutual enjoyment of Harry Potter), I consider that a negligible loss in the face of stating my position and ensuring that any misconceptions have been addressed.
