Regulus is perfect.
Sirius has known this for as long as he can remember, and when he is thirteen years old, he loves Regulus as a brother.
They hide beneath the blankets at midnight and vanquish monsters with pilfered cutlery. When Regulus skins his knee on the flagstone path in the garden, Sirius kisses it better, and carries him up the stairs into the house. When Sirius has nightmares, Regulus is there beside him when he wakes, and holds him until the shadows on the ceiling are nothing but the limbs of the giant oak trees outside his bedroom window.

Regulus is perfect.
Sirius has known this for as long as he can remember, and when he is fifteen, he loves Regulus as a friend.
They use aging potions to sneak into a pub for their first taste of alcohol. When Regulus, with his innocent eyes and pouting lips, is pulled into a dark corner by a group of men, Sirius is there beside him. They fight with their backs against the wall. When Sirius drinks too much firewhiskey to ease the pain of his bruised knuckles, Regulus laughs with him as they stumble together through the streets of London.

Regulus is perfect.
Sirius has known this for as long as he can remember, and when he is fifteen, he loves Regulus more than life itself.
They lie together in the cool grass, drunk on warm summer nights and the taste of one another's mouths. When Regulus rolls his hips and comes with a startled cry, Sirius strokes three fingertips along the curve of his brother's jaw. When Sirius whispers tell me you love me, Regulus whispers I love you always. They are infinite, restless and immortal as the distant stars for which they are named.

Regulus is perfect.
Sirius has known this for as long as he can remember, and when he is sixteen, he hates Regulus more than he can bear.
They say their goodbyes with glares and cold silence. When Regulus slips the ring his brother has given him for his birthday off his finger, Sirius accepts it without a word. When Sirius steps out onto the porch of Number Twelve Grimmauld Place, the door closes behind him with a soft click, and Regulus does not follow. The light in his bedroom window flickers and dies.
Gemini is just visible over the horizon.
