They whispered things— that he was as mad as he was beautiful, frightening and wrong in fundamental ways that made it impossible to separate the parts from the whole. They called him a malevolent prophet, a childish harbinger of darkness. They turned their backs to him, but never their eyes, standing in the shadows and watching him with the wary gazes of prey waiting, breathless, for the first strike of the serpent's fangs.
All but one.
So when Sirius held him— trapped by bed curtains, warmed by his brother's breath— and whispered, "You're beautiful," Regulus smiled and whispered, "I know."
